Lesson 3 Creating a Lesson
UNIT 1
TYPES AND COMPONENTS OF COMPUTER SYSTEMS
Introduction
A computer system has both hardware and software components. A computer is made up of different components, all of which are very important for the overall effective functioning of its system. A computer is a machine that can be instructed to carry out sequences of arithmetic or logical operations automatically via computer programming. This lesson will discuss these components and Students to understand the role and contribution of each component to the effective working of the system.
Lessons to be covered in this unit are:
Lesson 1: Hardware (Internal hardware devices and External hardware devices)
Lesson 2: Software (Applications Software and System Software)
Lesson 3: Types of computers
Objectives
At the end of this unit the student should be able to:
Define the physical components of hardware for a computer system.
Identify Internal external hardware devices and peripherals.
Define software as programs for controlling the operation of a computer
Define applications software, define and describe system software.
Distinguish between computer hardware and software
Lesson 1
Hardware
Hardware is the physical component that makes up the computer system. Each item of hardware has its specific roles in a computer system. Hardware components can either be internal or external.
Objectives
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
Define Hardware
Identify internal hardware devices (Processor, motherboards, random access memory (RAM), read-only memory (ROM), video cards, sound cards, and internal hard disk drives.
Identify external hardware devices and peripherals (such as monitors, keyboards, mice, keyboards, printers as input and output devices and external storage devices in general).
Activity
ROM and RAM are types of memory found in computers. What do ROM and RAM stand for and What is the difference between ROM and RAM?
Make a note of all the external hardware devices you can think of, Now explain what the devices on your list do, and differentiate them whether they are input or output devices.
Now do the quiz below.
Quiz 1
What happens to data on our Hard Disk Drive when we turn the power off?
What happens to data in RAM when we switch the power off?
What is the most important element of a computer?
How do we measure Processor Speed?
Give the full meaning of the following acronyms: CPU, RAM
Summary
Hardware is the physical component that makes up the computer system. Computer hardware includes the physical parts of a computer, such as the:
Case
central processing unit
monitor
mouse
keyboard
computer data storage
graphics card
sound card
speakers
motherboard.
Feedback to quizzes
Quiz 1
The Data is stored in the hard drive
It will lose its data
CPU
Gigahertz
CPU - Central Processing Unit of the computer
RAM - Random Access Memory
Assignment
Define input and output devices, List input and output devices then describe all their functions in a computer and describe the difference between Input and Output devices.
Assignment rubric
Reflection
Look at the objectives and then reflect on what you have learned or not learned, difficulties you encountered, meaningfulness, or meaningless of the lesson. Reflect on the presentation of the lesson and on whether you enjoyed it or not and say why.
Are you now able to?
Define Hardware?
List Internal hardware devices?
List External Devices?
Differentiate internal and External hardware devices
